June 3, 2018: Government of Nepal, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has recently unveiled National Curriculum Framework, there would be an integrated curriculum from Grade I to III and a single track curriculum from Grade IX to XII.
There will be seven subjects in Grade IX and X, including two optional subjects. Optional subjects will be skill-based subjects. Similarly, Nepali, English, Nepal study, and Skill based subject are four compulsory subjects for the students of Grade XI and XII.
The draft of the framework was finalized by the board that included members of National Curriculum Development Board and the Evaluation Council chaired by the Minister for Education.
Curriculum Development Centre had prepared the draft of new curriculum for early childhood level to Grade XII. As per the curriculum framework, the syllabus has been designed in credit hour system. The new curriculum emphasises on skill-based education. As per the new curriculum, in the foundation level, students’ soft skills will be developed and in the secondary level, emphasis will be given on developing hard skills.
Local levels are given authority to conduct examinations up to Grade VIII. Similarly, Grade X examinations will be conducted at provincial level and Grade XII examinations will be conducted at the national level. The new curriculum also envisions three types of education for Grade IX to XII — General, Sanskrit or Traditional, and Technical and Professional.
In the press meeting organized to present the evaluation of Ministry of Science and Technology, student admission and other various subjects, Education Minister Pokharel said that the National Curriculum Draft will be passed in accordance with the country's constitution, education law and regulations.
"Essential improvements have been made in the curriculum to produce qualified manpower based on the social justice assured by the constitution, the production of required manpower is determined by the curriculum and we are moving forward in this direction," said Minister Pokharel.
Grade 11 and 12 will now have Nepali, English, Nepal Study, and Skill based subject as 4 compulsory subjects with other 3 optional subjects. Similarly, provisions have been made to keep 5 compulsory subjects and 2 optional subjects in grade 9 and grade 10. Among the 2 optional subjects, there will be a skill-based subject as well.
